Buy itA Journey of One's Own was written for women who long to travel but are a little hesitant about facing the open road alone. Author Thalia Zepatos has traveled by camel across the Thar Desert, hitchhiked along the Malay Peninsula, and trekked the high country of Nepal, and in this book she offers advice, encouragement, and wisdom to the women she hopes will follow in her footsteps. Zepatos recognizes that female travelers face challenges that their male counterparts seldom experience: sexual harassment, safety and health concerns, and cultural attitudes are a real part of any woman's travel experience. She also believes that women experience travel differently from men, and she sees the "global sisterhood of women" as a positive, ready-made opportunity for women to interact with whatever culture in which they find themselves.
Travel essays by women alternate with chapters on practical matters such as traveling alone, finding a compatible travel companion, planning your itinerary, and staying safe and healthy; as an added bonus, there's a list of resources that covers a variety of topics, from travel books and magazines to Internet service providers and socially/environmentally responsible travel opportunities. So, stop dreaming and start planning that fantasy trip with A Journey of One's Own.

Satisfaction is usually a function of expectations. I had expected this book to provide insights for independent/ solo travelers. It is actually a primer on solo domestic and international travel for those who are/ or want to embark on an initial solo trip.
Most of the advise here I have written/given provided for employees we have sent overseas. It is all pretty basic stuff - which I think would be very helpful if you have not ever travelled and are pretty anxious about it. It would have been a great read twenty years ago when I left for Greece on my first solo trip. After a hiatus of 20 years (raising the my own Greek souvenir) of travel, I have been lucky enough to be in a position to travel to many destinations for work and I was looking for some more advanced insight on places that are more or less female friendly to help provide direction for my side trips. Oh well shame on me for not reading all the info. I was going to give two stars but have given three as this would be good for a different audience.
The other thing that tweaked me was that I purchased the Amazon package of three books, this one, Wanderlust and Lipstick as well as Fly Solo. Fly Solo was the best of the three with recommendation on specific locations and why they were good choices for solo travel with details on the best things to do, unfortunately Wanderlust and Lipstick had almost the same format and same information as Journey of One's Own with minor variations between the two,so why you would package price almost the same book makes no sense to me. If you are on the verge of solo travel I would only pick one or the other you do not need both - they are redundant. I will likely return these two.

This is probably the best book ever written for women who travel solo - absolutely fantastic. Written in 2003, it hasn't aged a day and is every bit as relevant now as then. If you were only buying a single book on how to organize your solo trip, this would be IT!

I liked this book. I found it helpful. But it didn't seem to make traveling solo any easier, especially for women. It just wasn't reassuring enough. I loved reading about the author jumping around from country to country with utter sang froid, but I do think she had a lot more contacts to smooth the way than the average person.

I've read many travel books and searched out various resources over the last year, but Thalia's book really hit home with me. She prompts the woman traveller to dilligently question her own motives and to really delve deep into why she wants to travel and how certain aspects of travel may affect a woman's TOTAL well-being. I've answered many questions in my journal and I have to admit I've adjusted my travel plans (for the better) because of Thalia's insightful book.

This book is outstanding. It is about real travel and interaction, not the 9 countries in 13 days type thing. It is very practical, addressing the real problems faced by the solo woman traveler (harassment, cultural attitudes, personal safety issues). It also has the standard advice of what to pack, etc. I appreciate the special aadvice for seeking interaction with other cultures by actually living and working among the local population......travel is much more than what you can see thru the tour bus window.
